Farmington High School

On November 6, 2023, thirteen Farmington High School students took advantage of an amazing opportunity through the FHS and O&G Building Group collaboration, called O&G Builds. As a part of this experience, students first met with architects and interior designers from TSKP Studios. Students had the opportunity to learn about the design process, look at early drawings and models of the new building, and ask questions to learn from the people who designed the building. After the presentation, students toured the building with the professionals who designed and are building the new Farmington High School.

Upcoming O&G Builds visits will focus on careers in Masonry, Carpentry, Mechanical, Plumbing and Electric trades, along with Computer-Aided Design, Construction Management and Civil and Landscaping Engineering.

Emma Hall, class of 2026 had the following to say about her experience:

“I had a wonderful experience touring the construction site of the new Farmington High School. A group of FHS students and I went over to first meet up with the main architects, construction managers and interior designers. They showed us the process of creating a school, from the exterior all the way to the interior, then we took a tour of the school. I learned how difficult a job construction is, how long of a process planning architecture is, and how much you have to pay attention to the small details in interior designing. This learning experience really impacted my idea of my own personal future. This visit allowed me to dive deep into a possible career in architecture. I’m excited for me and my peers to embark on a future more conducive to a better learning experience brought on by this new school.”

Irving A. Robbins

Students from Irving Robbins’ Community Contributor classes recently visited the construction site of the new Farmington High School building. On this trip the students were able to talk to the project manager and discuss a variety of important topics such as the significance of trade work in the economy, two-dimensional and three dimensional design and its application in construction, the importance of women throughout the design, engineering, and construction process, as well as the importance of project commitments. Students were able to look at the architectural plans for the new high school, which connects directly with the two-dimensional design work that is learned as a part of the Applied Physics and Engineering 7 and Community Contributors curriculum.

After discussing the size and scope of the new high school project, students were able to tour the building and see all of the “unseen” work that goes into creating a safe and usable building that upholds local and state building codes. Students were able to see the fireproofing materials as well as the sprinkler systems, before the finished sheetrock and ceiling material were put into place. Students were also able to tour the cafeteria, gymnasium, and auditorium while the project manager discussed the various trades and the work that each contributed to support bringing the new Farmington High School building to life.

West Woods Upper Elementary School

Sixth grader Aviva Reisner reflected on the field trip to the FHS site building:

“It was really cool to be able to see the empty shell of a building that will soon be full of learning, laughter, and talking. It was amazing to see how the new school will be very environmentally friendly and hear from the builders and directors that girls in engineering can change the future and make their communities better.”
